A spin-down filter is a reusable pre-filter installed on a water line to capture larger particles such as sand, rust, and debris before they reach finer filters, plumbing, or appliances.
They are commonly used as a first-stage pre-filter where well water contains visible or coarse sediment. The appropriate micron rating depends on the size and amount of particles present.
No. A standard sediment screen captures suspended particles but does not remove the dissolved minerals and salts measured as TDS.
A standard sediment spin-down filter is not designed to remove dissolved chlorine or disinfect water. Additional treatment is needed when those are filtration goals.
A sediment filter may capture particulate rust or precipitated iron particles large enough for the screen, but it should not be assumed to remove dissolved iron from water.
Some spin-down systems combine sediment filtration with anti-scale media intended to help control scale formation. This is different from a conventional ion-exchange water softener and should not be treated as equivalent.
